Gummy bear implants (technically called form-stable implants, or highly cohesive silicone gel implants) are the latest advancement in breast implant technology, and their popularity has increased since receiving FDA approval last year. What is it that women love about gummy bear implants so much?
1. Firmer Texture
The primary reason women say they prefer gummy bear implants is the claim that they feel more like natural breast tissue. Saline is very liquid while traditional silicone gel has the consistency of jelly. Form-stable implants, though, have a firm yet giving quality to them like a gummy bear candy (hence their nickname) that more closely mimics the feel of a natural, youthful breast.
2. Possibly Reduced Risk of Capsular Contracture
Occurring in about 10 percent of breast augmentations, capsular contracture remains a concern for all women considering implants. Some research suggests that this abnormal scar tissue growth is less likely when using gummy bear implants, compared to saline or even traditional silicone gel implant models. Since all implant types use a very similar silicone shell, doctors are not entirely sure why this would be. It’s a good idea to ask your surgeon about the latest research.
3. Natural Shape
Saline and silicone gel breast implants are typically produced in a round shape, because gravity pulls these more fluid implants into a natural profile. However, gummy bear implants don’t shift in response to gravity, so the implants themselves are teardrop-shaped like a typical breast. This makes them ideal for creating an attractive slope to the breasts, particularly when used in reconstructive breast surgery.
Accounting for all of these advantages and the research and development that has gone into gummy bear breast implants, it’s not surprising to find that they do cost a bit more than other implant types. On balance, though, form-stable implants offer a number of advantages and seem likely to enjoy a highly successful future.
