Are you considering enhancing your small or asymmetrical breasts with breast implants? If so, you likely want to learn as much about your implant options as possible. There’s a lot of information circulating about these medical devices — more than you probably realize!
Here are some of the most surprising facts about breast implants.
More Popular than Ever
In the past 14 years, the popularity of breast augmentation in the United States has tripled. The U.S. has the highest number of breast implant surgeries performed, followed by Brazil and Mexico. Worldwide, more than 1.7 million breast implant procedures were performed last year.
Most Procedures Are Performed on 30-Somethings
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, women ages 30-39 had the highest number of breast augmentation procedures performed (105,877 out of 300,000 procedures). Next were women ages 40-54. This may be surprising if you assumed younger women (college-aged) were more motivated to have breast implants placed.
The most likely reason for this trend is that many women in their thirties, forties and fifties have lost breast volume as a result of pregnancy and nursing. Breast augmentation is frequently included in mommy makeover, a combination of procedures designed to treat the physical effects of pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Is Possible
There are rumors that having breast implants precludes a woman from breastfeeding. In reality, this usually is not the case; many women are able to successfully nurse with implants.
Breast Cancer Detection
Breast implants may make it difficult to detect abnormalities in a mammogram, since they can hide some of the natural breast tissue. If you have implants, be sure to alert your radiologist or mammogram technician ahead of time so they are aware.
Primitive Breast Enlargement
There have been attempts to augment breast size with foreign materials dating back to the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. Materials such as paraffin, beeswax, sponges, vegetable oil, ivory, glass balls, ground rubber and ox cartilage were inserted into the breasts during dangerous procedures. These filling materials were not well tolerated and caused numerous complications.
The earliest versions of the implants we still use today were teardrop-shaped and filled with silicone gel.
Average Size Increase
Most women who have breast implants placed go up two cup sizes, according to Dr. Leroy Young, the chair of the breast surgery committee of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
The World’s Largest Implants
Sheyla Hershey of Houston, Texas, holds the Guinness World Record for largest breast implants (cup size: MMM). She credits her breast implants to saving her life when she got into a car accident and the airbags didn’t inflate.
A French actress and dancer named Lolo Ferrari holds the world record for the most breast enlargement procedures (22).
