Ethnic rhinoplasty aims to enhance the shape and overall look of the nose while preserving the patient’s unique ethnic background. In recent years, ethnic rhinoplasty has been one of the most frequently requested plastic surgery procedures among African-Americans, Middle Eastern-Americans, Asians and Latinos/Hispanics. Many of these patients seek rhinoplasty to make subtle enhancements to their nose, without erasing their specific ethnic facial traits. As a leading plastic surgeon, Dr. David Sayah has years of experience performing rhinoplasty on people who come from different backgrounds. Here, he discusses the factors that should be considered with ethnic rhinoplasty.
What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
In previous decades, rhinoplasty was primarily used to create a more westernized nose, taking into consideration the anatomical features of a Caucasian nose. But in recent years, plastic surgeons have performed rhinoplasty with a person’s ethnicity in mind, understanding more and more that there is no one nose that is “ideal” for everyone. Instead, a person’s ethnic background plays a large role in determining the ideal size and shape of the nose.
There are different goals and approaches to rhinoplasty depending on a person’s ethnic background. Darker skin is more prone to scarring and pigment abnormalities due to a brown pigment found in the skin. Certain types of ethnic skin may also be thicker and oilier than fair skin.
The African American nose tends to have a wide, low nasal bridge, flared nostrils and a round tip. Common nasal traits among Hispanic noses include thick nasal skin and a wide nasal bridge and base. The Middle Eastern nose tends to have a pronounced nasal hump, and a wide or round tip, while the Asian nose generally has a bulbous tip with a low, wide and flat nasal bridge.
