The Nose: Essential for Facial Harmony
Study after study shows that men and women rank those with greater facial symmetry as more attractive. And one of the primary facial features that affects overall facial harmony is the nose. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) at my Beverly Hills practice remains one of the most commonly requested procedures by patients. Instinctively, they seem to understand that something as minor as a nose that’s too big or too small can have a huge impact on how you look.
Conceptual Beauty
The theory of facial harmony as a standard of beauty has been around for quite a while. Some of the most recognizable and beautiful faces in the world – Natalie Portman, Brad Pitt, Michelle Pfeiffer – are also the most symmetrical.
While some argue that this is a social construct, evolutionary theorists suggest that symmetry is an indication of superior genetics. It’s also possible that those with greater facial harmony have been exposed to fewer stressors during their development, making them (biologically) a more ideal match.
The Nose
The nose has a tremendous impact on overall facial harmony. If a nose is too small, the face can look flat and broad. If a nose is too large, the chin may appear less attractive, or other features may be overwhelmed. Bringing the nose into harmony with other facial features is the goal of a ‘nose job.’ At my Los Angeles practice, I carefully weigh all the facial features in order to determine the best course of action to bring the face into greater balance.
Whether adding or subtracting to your nose, a very tiny physical change can make a huge improvement in your attractiveness to others and to yourself, while bringing your entire face into harmony.
