Comparing the Most In-Demand Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are a popular choice among our Beverly Hills patients who wish to eliminate wrinkles and other signs of aging. These noninvasive injectable fillers can also restore volume to sagging skin around the eyes and cheeks. Leading plastic surgeon Dr. David Sayah offers several dermal fillers, all which have their unique benefits. So which one is right for you? The answer would ultimately depend on your aesthetic needs and goals. In this blog post, we take a look at the most popular dermal fillers and their benefits.
Hyaluronic Acid-Based Fillers
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that provides moisture, volume and firmness to the skin. As we grow older, the body produces less of this substance, contributing to the appearance of wrinkles, folds and jowls on the facial skin. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers may be right for you if you seek to temporarily (as little as three months) restore volume and firmness to the skin.
One of the most commonly used hyaluronic acid-based fillers is Restylane, which is best used to diminish laugh lines, brow lines and nasolabial folds (the lines formed in between the nose and lips). The results from Restylane injections can last up to one year. For a furrowed brow and lines around the eyes, Dr. Sayah recommends Belotero, a hyaluronic acid filler that can also be used to add volume to most areas on the face, including the lips. Results can last from six to nine months.
For deep volume enhancement around the face, including the cheeks and beneath the eyes, consider Voluma. Results typically last up to two years. Perlane is another option for volume enhancement. It is typically used to plump the cheeks and chin as well as smoothen wrinkles around the eyebrows. Results can last nine to 12 months.
Collagen is a substance in the body that is responsible for maintaining the skin’s firmness and elasticity. Collagen-based fillers increase the amount of collagen in the skin collagen, helping the skin to look youthful and wrinkle-free. If you seek longer-lasting results than those from hyaluronic acid fillers, you may want to consider a collagen-based filler.
One of the most popular collagen fillers, Radiesse, stimulates collagen growth and can add volume and smoothen deep lines around the face. Results can last up to two years.
Artefill is the only approved permanent filler. It is best used on nasofabial folds, laugh lines, wrinkles and to plump the lips. A word of caution, though: because Artefill is permanent, problems like lumpiness or unevenness can be hard to treat.
Facial injectables contain synthetic materials to help keep the face looking youthful. Dr. Sayah offers Sculptra, a synthetic filler that contains poly-L-lactic acid and can stimulate collagen growth. It is ideal for deep volume augmentation throughout the face and to erase nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. Sculptra is preferred by patients who seek longer-lasting results than those offered by hyaluronic acid fillers. Sculptra achieves a smoother and fuller facial appearance for about two years.
