Debunking Anti-Aging Skin Care Myths
By now, you may have heard hundreds of tips and advice on how to keep your skin looking young and healthy, but how many of them are actually true? In this blog post, leading plastic surgeon and skin care specialist Dr. David Sayah debunks some of the most common myths regarding skin care.
Myth: Everyone’s skin ages the same way.
Fact: This is not true as there are several factors that affect the way your skin ages, including lifestyle, environment, diet and genetics. Individuals with oilier skin may also be safe from wrinkles for a time, as all the extra oils produced by their skin helps to keep it moisturized. Lifestyle and dietary choices also play an important role. Someone who properly protects their skin from sun exposure can stave off sun damage, including wrinkles and fine lines, longer than those who don’t.
Myth: The more often I exfoliate, the better.
Fact: This is not true, as there is such a thing as “over-exfoliating.” Exfoliating your skin is essential to keeping your skin looking young and healthy, because it removes dead skin and makes way for a new, fresh layer of skin. However, exfoliating too often can irritate and dry the skin. Try exfoliating with a gentle oil-based scrub once or twice a week. Or, try a chemical peel with Dr. Sayah. Chemical peels are exfoliative treatments that slough away dead skin and brighten the skin. They can address aging skin, adult acne, sun damage and fine lines.
Myth: I should only wear sunscreen on sunny days.
Fact: Your skin is at risk for sun damage even during cloudy or overcast weather. This is why sunscreen should be worn year round. If not, you could be at risk for premature wrinkles and fine lines. In fact, research shows sun exposure is the leading cause of wrinkles. Wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 can help minimize your risk of premature wrinkles.
If you have noticed signs of sun damage on your skin, consider a skin rejuvenation treatment. Dr. Sayah offers a laser skin procedure that improves the appearance of the skin by eliminating sun spots, and wrinkles and improving skin tone and texture caused by sun damage.
Myth: BOTOX is only for older people.
Fact: BOTOX and other dermal fillers are increasingly being used on people in their 20s and 30s who want to prevent wrinkles and other signs of premature aging from appearing on the skin. Waiting until lines become etched into the skin could make it more difficult to smoothen the skin. BOTOX temporarily relaxes the muscles underneath the facial skin, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. BOTOX is a favorite among our Beverly Hills patients because the results are immediately noticeable and there is no downtime needed.
